Meeting Recap: Residents Pack Planning Commission Over 5,500-Home Cane Bay Expansion
Sunday, May 31, 2026
On May 30, District 6 residents filled the Berkeley County Planning Commission meeting as the commission took up a proposed 5,500-home expansion in the Cane Bay area. After sustained public comment, the commission delayed its vote.
Leroy Godfrey Jr. spoke as a resident — not yet as a candidate — and put the stakes in plain terms: “Once the trees are gone, they don’t grow back. It cannot be undone once it’s approved.”
The delay showed what residents can accomplish when they show up. But showing up at hearings is only half the equation. District 6 needs a voice at the table when these decisions are made — someone who asks the infrastructure questions before the vote, not after the traffic arrives.
